Skin Cancer Claims
Non-melanoma type skin cancers are generally referred to as either Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) or Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC).
Under Queensland laws, anyone with SCCs and BCCs caused by work-related sun can obtain significant lump sum compensation and other benefits through an application to WorkCover Queensland. A disease like SCC and BCC can attract lump sum compensation even where the sun exposure occurred many years previously and was quite transient in nature.
In the case of retirees with BCCs or SCCs, this lump sum compensation is in excess of what would likely be awarded by a court in Queensland. Therefore, retirees who develop SCC and BCC as a result of employment in Queensland are in most cases better off lodging an application with WorkCover rather than pursuing a court claim.
Death benefits are also available to widows whose loved ones died as a result of SCC caused by work related sun exposure.
