Melanomas
Many Queensland workers have been exposed to the harmful UV effects of the sun while performing their work duties and, as a result, have developed melanoma.
Under Queensland laws, such people may be eligible to obtain significant lump sum and other benefits through an application to WorkCover Queensland. A disease like melanoma can attract lump sum compensation even where the sun exposure occurred many years previously and was quite transient in nature.
If you have retired, this lump sum compensation is more than what would likely be awarded by a court in Queensland, so eligible workers are often better off lodging an application with WorkCover rather than pursuing a court claim. Death benefits are also available to widows whose loved ones died as a result of melanoma caused by work related sun exposure.
Strict time limits apply to claims for melanoma compensation - if you do not bring a claim within the time limits, or comply with the procedures, you may lose your right to recover compensation forever. You should seek our advice as soon as possible after a diagnosis to ensure that your rights are protected.
